- Evaluating Potential Employers
- An Institute Medicine report on the future of nursing declared that nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training and that they should be full partners with physician and other health care workers in redesigning health care in the US. Does the organization or practice owner feel the same?
- Does the employer understand your role? According to an AAP report, an overwhelming majority see PNPs as those who: perform assessments, patient education, develop management treatment plans, coordinate care, perform well child exams, and interpret lab or test results.
- 33% of providers indicated that NPs rarely or never manage the care of children with complex chronic illnesses. This is something to consider - do they let you practice within the scope of your credentials? Does the physician want to limit some aspect of the PNP care provisions?
- Scope of Practice: What will your scope of practice look like within the organization?
- Prescribing Authority by State
- Is there a collaborative agreement?
- State board of nursing requirements
- Advanced Practice Nurse Orientation Process -Do they have an orientation process, and what does the process consist of?
- Contracts and Negotiations
- Do you like their office environment? Evaluate their turnover rate, customer service, practice setting, asses PNP outcomes patient satisfaction, treatment variations, quality measurements
- How many patients per day does the practice see? How many are you expected to see?
- Community outreach – Is the practice involved in the community and do they have a good community patient base?
- Office and business structure – Who runs the office? Are they business savvy? Do they have a respectable website and do they market the practice or organization well?
