How Healthy is Your Brand? 5 Prescriptions for NPs and PAs

Posted on April 27, 2018   |   by   |   Career Development, Job Seekers

It’s time for a check-up on your professional brand: Is it a healthy driver for your career success? We have a course of action to boost your reputation as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Your professional brand is something you live every day. It’s not just an image, or a certain “look.” Sure, what you wear and how you present yourself is part of it. But what really matters is how you show up day in and day out as an NP or PA.

On last week’s blog, I introduced you to Laura, a new NP who established a reputation for empathy, situational awareness, and patient care during her student clinicals. Despite a lack of experience, she landed her dream job after graduation-in large part because she had a strong professional brand!

Managing your brand is an intentional process. The worst thing you can do is to put your career on autopilot. If you don’t manage your brand, others will. So, let’s talk about how you can live your brand and really find satisfaction in your work environment.

The #1 Brand-Killer That Often Goes Unnoticed

Did you know that a disengaged workforce is more expensive for a healthcare organization than high staff turnover? That’s because an inattentive and indifferent team poses a serious risk to patient safety and the quality of care.

In the same way, if you’re not engaged in your current role as an NP or PA, you’re putting your own career at risk in more ways than one.

Don’t ignore the warning signs. You might be disengaged if the quality of your work is slipping, and you don’t care as much as you used to. Or, if getting to work on time and going the extra mile feels like a huge effort. Or, if you’re isolating yourself from colleagues you used to turn to for support.

If any of this feels familiar, it’s time to take action! Here are five prescriptions that will revive your professional reputation.

Five Ways to Breathe Life Into Your PA or NP Brand

1) Invest in yourself personally and professionally
Healthcare professionals are susceptible to feeling overworked and emotionally drained. Left unresolved, physical and emotional stress can lead to lower job performance and decreased job satisfaction. To reduce your job stress, prioritize self-care, advocate for yourself, and clarify your role.

2) Live your brand and believe in your ability to make an impact
If your work life isn’t as satisfying as it once was, a job search self-assessment can be an invaluable tool for identifying your work values. It can be as simple as asking yourself a series of questions that pertain to your career, personal life, desired location, and goals.

3) Decide if your current role is the right fit
Seek to be challenged, grow, and become a better leader. These opportunities abound in organizations that value their employees and foster healthy work environments.

4) Determine if you’re practicing to your full scope of practice.
Today’s healthcare trend toward multi-disciplinary teams opens more career opportunities to NPs and PAs who specialize in delivering coordinated care. That’s why it’s critical that you strive to practice to the fullest scope of your training and knowledge.

5) Make sure you’re not giving too much.
With all the demands you face as an NP or PA, strong communication skills can be your best defense against an overwhelming workload.  It’s never too late to brush up on essential communication techniques and become more effective on the job.

Creating and maintaining a curriculum vitae, more commonly known as a CV, can be a great way to more actively manage your brand. As we discussed in a recent post, for NPs and PAs, a CV is a “living document” that tells your professional story year after year. It is a comprehensive record of your qualifications, and therefore a reflection of your brand.

There’s no reason to start writing your PA or NP CV from scratch. We’ve developed a free CV template for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants based on our years of experience and research in Advanced Practice Staffing. Click the link below to download it today!
